How to Use an Authenticator App
An authenticator app generates 6-digit codes on your phone that you enter when signing in. You only need to set it up once; after that, open the app whenever you need a code. You do not need to scan the QR code with your phone's main camera—you scan it inside the authenticator app.
1. Download an Authenticator App
If you don't already have one, install one of these apps on your smartphone (iPhone or Android). Any of them will work.
2. Open the App and Add an Account
In the authenticator app, choose to add an account or set up a new account. The exact wording varies by app:
- Google Authenticator: Tap the "+" or "Add an code", then choose "Scan a QR code".
- Microsoft Authenticator: Tap "+" or "Add account", then "Work or school account" or "Other account", then "Scan QR code".
- Authy: Tap "+" or "Add Account", then "Scan QR Code".
Figure 1: In your authenticator app, look for "Add account", "+", or "Set up new account".
3. Scan the QR Code Inside the App
Use the camera that opens inside the authenticator app to scan the QR code shown on the BlueFolder setup page. Do not use your phone's regular Camera app—that will only take a photo. The authenticator app's built-in scanner reads the QR code and adds the account automatically.
Figure 2: The app will open its own camera. Point it at the QR code on your computer screen until it recognizes the code.
4. Enter the 6-Digit Code
After scanning, the app will show a 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. Type that code into the BlueFolder "Verification code" field and click Verify and Complete. If the code is rejected, wait for the next one and try again (codes expire quickly).
Figure 3: Copy the code from the app and enter it on the BlueFolder setup page.
5. You're Done
Once verification succeeds, your account is protected. The next time you sign in, you'll enter your password and then the current 6-digit code from the app. Keep the app on your phone—you'll need it each time you log in (unless you use "Remember this device").
If You Get Stuck
- "I don't see a camera in the app." Look for "Add account", "Set up account", or "Scan QR code" in the app's menu; the camera opens from there.
- "The QR code won't scan." Make sure the screen is bright, the code is fully visible, and you're using the scanner inside the authenticator app. Or use the manual key instead.
- "My code was rejected." Codes expire in about 30 seconds. Enter the newest code shown in the app, and ensure your phone's time is set to automatic.
